Ivytimol Eye Drop 0.5% contains timolol maleate, a beta-adrenergic blocking agent that reduces intraocular pressure in the eye. This prescription medication works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor fluid, making it effective for treating various eye conditions related to increased eye pressure.
Uses
Ivytimol Eye Drop is primarily used to treat open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It helps prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss by lowering abnormally high pressure within the eye. Occasionally, it may be prescribed off-label for other conditions like preventing migraine headaches or treating certain types of infantile hemangiomas.
Benefits
- Effectively reduces intraocular pressure in glaucoma patients
- Helps prevent progression of vision loss due to glaucoma
- Convenient once or twice daily dosing regimen
- Well-established safety profile with decades of clinical use
- Preserves optic nerve function when used consistently
- May reduce risk of glaucoma-related blindness
- Cost-effective treatment option for long-term therapy
- Available as a solution without significant blurring effect
How It Works
Ivytimol Eye Drop blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body of the eye, reducing the production of aqueous humor fluid. With less fluid being produced, intraocular pressure decreases. Timolol has minimal effect on pupil size or accommodation, allowing for better preservation of normal vision while treating the underlying condition.
Duration of Action
Effects begin approximately 30 minutes after administration, with maximum pressure reduction occurring at 1-2 hours. Pressure-lowering effects typically last 12-24 hours per dose. With regular use, stable reduction in intraocular pressure is maintained throughout the treatment period. Most patients require long-term or indefinite treatment.
Dosage
Eye Condition | Initial Dose | Maintenance Dose |
---|---|---|
Glaucoma | 1 drop twice daily | 1 drop once or twice daily |
Ocular Hypertension | 1 drop twice daily | Adjust based on response |
Pediatric Use | Consult specialist | Determined by ophthalmologist |
Side Effects
Local eye effects may include stinging, burning, redness, or dry eye sensation upon instillation. Less commonly, blurred vision or eye discomfort might occur. Systemic absorption can cause slowed heart rate, lowered blood pressure, breathing difficulties, or fatigue in sensitive individuals. Report persistent or severe reactions to your doctor.
Warning
Patients with certain heart conditions, asthma, COPD, or severe bradycardia should use with caution or avoid use. May interact with other beta-blockers or certain heart medications. Discontinue if signs of allergic reaction occur. Do not touch dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination. Some systemic absorption occurs; monitor for cardiovascular or respiratory effects.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Use during pregnancy only when potential benefits outweigh possible risks. Timolol can cross the placenta and affect the fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk when used by nursing mothers. Consult with healthcare provider about the benefits and risks if pregnant or breastfeeding.
Interactions
- May enhance effects of oral beta-blockers or calcium channel blockers
- Could interact with certain antiarrhythmic medications
- Potential interaction with some antidiabetic medications
- May increase effects when used with other eye pressure-lowering agents
- Possible interaction with certain anesthetics during surgery
Precaution
Remove contact lenses before applying and wait 15 minutes before reinsertion. Apply pressure to inner corner of eye for 1-2 minutes after instillation to reduce systemic absorption. Wait at least 5 minutes between using different eye medications. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use. Discard solution if it changes color or becomes cloudy.
Important Information
Ivytimol Eye Drop is for ophthalmic use only. Continue using as prescribed even when symptoms improve. Regular eye examinations are necessary to monitor treatment effectiveness. Store at room temperature away from direct light. Discard 4 weeks after opening. Do not share eye drops with others. Report any significant changes in vision or eye condition to your healthcare provider.
