Jardiance 10mg, containing empagliflozin, is a prescription medication from the SGLT2 inhibitor class. It is primarily designed to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus while also offering proven cardiovascular and renal benefits through its unique mechanism of action.
Uses
Jardiance is prescribed for managing type 2 diabetes alongside diet and exercise. It’s also approved for reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Additionally, it helps treat heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, even in patients without diabetes.
Benefits
- Effectively lowers blood glucose levels
- Reduces risk of cardiovascular death
- Promotes weight loss
- Decreases blood pressure
- Improves heart failure outcomes
- Protects kidney function
- Reduces risk of hospitalization for heart failure
- Supports long-term glycemic control
- Provides once-daily convenient dosing

How It Works
Jardiance works by inhibiting sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys. This process prevents glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion through urine. The mechanism helps lower blood sugar levels while promoting mild osmotic diuresis and caloric loss.
Duration of Action
Effects on blood glucose levels begin within 24 hours of the first dose. Maximum blood glucose-lowering effect is typically achieved within 12 weeks of consistent use. Cardiovascular benefits may be observed over longer periods of continuous treatment.
Dosage
Start with 10mg once daily, taken in the morning with or without food. Based on tolerability and glycemic needs, the dose may be increased to 25mg once daily. No dose adjustment is required for mild or moderate kidney impairment.
Side Effects
Most common side effects include urinary tract infections, female genital mycotic infections, increased urination, and thirst. Less common effects may include volume depletion, hypoglycemia (when used with insulin or sulfonylureas), and ketoacidosis in rare cases.
Warning
Monitor for signs of ketoacidosis, serious urinary tract infections, and hypotension. Temporary discontinuation is recommended before scheduled surgery. Regular monitoring of kidney function and volume status is essential, especially in elderly patients.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception while taking Jardiance. Discontinue treatment if pregnancy is detected.
Interactions
- May increase risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- Diuretics may increase risk of volume depletion
- Positive interference with 1,5-AG assay
- Monitor when used with lithium
- May affect other diabetes medications’ dosing requirements
Important Information
Store at room temperature (20-25°C). Take missed doses as soon as remembered unless it’s near the next scheduled dose. Regular monitoring of renal function, hydration status, and ketones (if applicable) is essential. Report any symptoms of ketoacidosis, severe UTI, or significant genital infection immediately.
