- Can be used for a variety of infection types
- Available in both oral and intravenous forms
How It Works
Levofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to rapid bacterial cell death.
Dosage
The typical dose is 500mg once daily for 7-14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection. Some infections may require higher doses or longer treatment duration. Always follow your healthcare provider’s specific dosing instructions.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness. Less common effects can include insomnia, rash, and altered taste. Rare but serious side effects may include tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and severe diarrhea (C. difficile-associated). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe muscle or joint pain, signs of tendon rupture, or any symptoms of an allergic reaction.
Warning
Not recommended for patients with a history of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use. May cause QT interval prolongation. Use with caution in elderly patients or those with kidney problems. Can increase the risk of aortic aneurysm or dissection in certain populations.
Interactions
May interact with antacids, iron supplements, and medications containing magnesium or aluminum. Can interact with NSAIDs, increasing the risk of CNS stimulation and seizures. May enhance the effect of oral anticoagulants. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you’re taking.
Important Information
Take L-flox-500mg with or without food, but avoid dairy products or calcium-fortified juices within 2 hours of dosing. Complete the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Stay well-hydrated during treatment. Avoid excessive sun exposure as this medication can increase photosensitivity. If you experience any symptoms of tendon pain or inflammation, stop taking the medication and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
