Orthopain Tablet is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that goes by the generic name Meloxicam. It is used to reduce inflammation and pain in the joints and muscles.
Uses
Orthopain Tablet is used for the treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis2. It is also used to relieve dental pain, neuropathic pain, and postoperative pain.
Benefits
Orthopain Tablet works by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 (COX-1 and -2) enzymes, resulting in reduced synthesis of prostaglandin precursors. This leads to decreased inflammation and pain.
Mechanism of Action
Orthopain Tablet inhibits prostaglandin synthetase (cyclooxygenase 1 and 2) enzymes, leading to a decreased synthesis of prostaglandins, which normally mediate painful inflammatory symptoms.
Dosage
For adults with osteoarthritis, the initial dose is 7.5 mg/day, which can be increased to 15 mg/day if necessary. For rheumatoid arthritis, the dosage is 15 mg/day.
Warnings
Meloxicam can increase the risk of fatal heart attack or stroke, especially if used long-term, taken in high doses, or if the patient has heart disease1. It may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal1. These conditions can occur without warning, especially in older adults.
Important Information
Meloxicam should not be used just before or after heart bypass surgery (coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG). It is also important to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as they increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
