Benefits
- Rapid delivery of medication directly to bloodstream
- Effective against severe viral infections
- Appropriate when oral therapy isn’t suitable
- Provides treatment option for immunocompromised patients
- Helps prevent viral replication and spread
- Reduces duration and severity of symptoms
- Decreases risk of complications from severe infections

How It Works
Osivir Infusion 500mg contains Aciclovir, which is converted to aciclovir triphosphate inside virus-infected cells. This active form inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing viral DNA synthesis and replication, thereby stopping the spread of infection while allowing the immune system to clear infected cells.
Duration of Action
Intravenous Aciclovir reaches peak plasma concentrations immediately after infusion. The elimination half-life is approximately 2-3 hours in patients with normal renal function, with antiviral activity continuing for 4-8 hours after administration.
Dosage
Patient Group | Recommended Dosage | Frequency |
---|---|---|
Adults (normal renal function) | 5-10 mg/kg | Every 8 hours |
Children 3 months-12 years | 250-500 mg/m² | Every 8 hours |
Neonates | 10-20 mg/kg | Every 8 hours |
Renal impairment | Adjusted dose | Extended interval |
Warnings
Osivir Infusion 500mg must be administered by slow intravenous infusion over at least 1 hour to avoid renal tubular damage. Rapid or bolus injection must be avoided. Adequate hydration is essential during treatment. Renal function should be monitored before and during therapy.
Side Effects
Common side effects include phlebitis or inflammation at the injection site, transient increases in liver enzymes, and reversible increases in blood urea and creatinine. Less common effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, skin rashes, and rarely, neurological reactions such as tremors or confusion.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Osivir Infusion 500mg should be used during pregnancy only when the potential benefits outweigh possible risks to the fetus. Use during breastfeeding requires careful consideration as Aciclovir passes into breast milk in small amounts.
Interactions
- Nephrotoxic drugs (increased risk of renal impairment)
- Probenecid (decreased Aciclovir elimination)
- Mycophenolate mofetil (increased levels of both drugs)
- Theophylline (potential increased theophylline levels)
- Zidovudine (increased risk of neurological adverse effects)
- Cimetidine (increased Aciclovir plasma levels)
Precautions
For intravenous use only. Reconstitute and dilute according to instructions before administration. Administer by slow intravenous infusion only. Maintain adequate hydration. Monitor renal function. Discontinue immediately if signs of hypersensitivity occur. Dispose of unused portion of the single-dose vial.
