Rocephin Injection IM 1G is a prescription medication containing ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. This intramuscular (IM) injection is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Uses
Rocephin Injection IM 1G is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Bone and joint infections
- Meningitis
- Sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea
- Intra-abdominal infections It’s also used for surgical prophylaxis to prevent post-operative infections.
Benefits
- Broad-spectrum activity against many types of bacteria
- Long half-life allowing for once-daily dosing in many cases
- Effective against some antibiotic-resistant strains
- Can be used for a wide range of infections
- Generally well-tolerated
- Intramuscular administration option for non-hospital settings
How It Works
Ceftriaxone works by interfering with the bacteria’s cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are enzymes essential for bacterial cell wall construction. This action leads to cell lysis and death of the bacteria.
Dosage
The dosage varies depending on the type and severity of infection, patient’s age, and weight. For most adult infections, 1-2 grams once daily or in two divided doses is common. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for dosing and administration.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include injection site pain, diarrhea, and nausea. Less common but more serious side effects can include allergic reactions, blood disorders, or liver problems. Report any unusual symptoms to your healthcare provider promptly.
Warning
Serious and occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported. Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD) has been reported with use of nearly all antibacterial agents, including Rocephin.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Rocephin Injection IM 1G should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It passes into breast milk in low concentrations. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
Interaction
- May interact with calcium-containing products
- Could affect blood clotting and interact with blood thinners
- Potential interactions with certain other antibiotics
Important Information
Rocephin should be administered exactly as prescribed. Complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better. Premature discontinuation can lead to antibiotic resistance. This medication is for intramuscular injection only and should be administered by a healthcare professional. Proper aseptic technique should be used. If you develop severe diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your healthcare provider immediately as this could be a sign of a serious intestinal infection.
