Sporidex Suspension 250mg is an antibiotic medication containing the active ingredient cefalexin, a member of the cephalosporin family of antibiotics. This oral suspension is designed to treat a variety of bacterial infections in both adults and children. Sporidex Suspension is available in various strengths and flavors to improve palatability and encourage compliance, especially in pediatric patients.
Uses
Sporidex Suspension 250mg is primarily used to treat respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, and pneumonia, as well as ear, skin, and urinary tract infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. It may also be prescribed for other types of infections, including bone and joint infections, when appropriate.
Benefits
The primary benefit of Sporidex Suspension is its ability to effectively combat a wide range of bacterial infections. By inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, cefalexin disrupts the growth and replication of susceptible bacteria, allowing the body’s immune system to eliminate the infection more efficiently. Additionally, Sporidex Suspension is well-tolerated by most patients, with a relatively low risk of side effects compared to some other antibiotics.
Mechanism of Action
Cefalexin, the active ingredient in Sporidex Suspension, belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics, which work by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. Specifically, cefalexin binds to and inhibits the activity of enzymes called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for the formation and maintenance of the bacterial cell wall. By disrupting the cell wall synthesis, cefalexin causes the bacterial cell to become fragile and eventually lyse (rupture), leading to the death of the bacteria.
Dosage
- The recommended total daily dose for children is 25-50 mg/kg (body weight) in divided doses.
- For skin and soft tissue infections, sore throat, and mild, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, the total daily dose may be divided and administered every 12 hours.
- For most infections, the following schedule is suggested:
- Children under 5 years: 125 mg every 8 hours.
- Children 5 years and over: 250 mg every 8 hours.
- In severe infections, the dose may be doubled.
- In the treatment of middle ear infections, a total daily dose of 75 to 100mg/kg in 4 doses is required.
- If you have any further questions about the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The recommended dosage of Sporidex Suspension varies depending on the patient’s age, weight, and the type and severity of the infection being treated. It is typically administered orally, either with or without food, every 6 to 12 hours. The duration of treatment may range from 7 to 14 days or longer, depending on the response to the medication and the type of infection.
Warning
Sporidex Suspension should be used with caution in patients with a history of allergies or hypersensitivity to cefalexin or other cephalosporin antibiotics. It may cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, in susceptible individuals. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about any known allergies or medical conditions before starting treatment.
Important Information
It is essential to complete the entire course of Sporidex Suspension as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. Skipping doses or stopping treatment prematurely may allow the bacteria to survive and become resistant to the antibiotic.
