Xatral XL Tablet contains alfuzosin hydrochloride, an α1-receptor blocker designed to alleviate urinary obstruction symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). This extended-release formulation offers once-daily dosing for convenient management of BPH symptoms.
Uses
Xatral XL is primarily used for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Benefits
- Relieves urinary obstruction symptoms of BPH
- Improves urine flow rate
- Reduces urinary frequency and urgency
- Convenient once-daily dosing
- Rapid onset of action with full effects in 2-3 weeks
How It Works
Alfuzosin works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck through α1-adrenoceptor blockade. This relaxation improves urine flow and reduces BPH-related symptoms.
Dosage
The usual dose is one 10mg tablet taken once daily after the same meal each day. Effects may begin in 2-3 days, but full relief can take 2-3 weeks. Dose adjustment may be necessary for patients with hepatic impairment.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, respiratory infection, and back or limb pain. Rare but serious side effects can include orthostatic hypotension and priapism. Consult your doctor if you experience any concerning symptoms.
Warning
Patients should be cautious when standing up due to the risk of orthostatic hypotension. Priapism, though rare, requires immediate medical attention. Xatral XL should not be used in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Xatral XL is not indicated for use in women. It’s primarily prescribed for men with BPH.
Interaction
- May interact with other alpha-blockers or antihypertensive medications
- Caution advised when used with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
- Potential interaction with PDE5 inhibitors used for erectile dysfunction
- Inform your doctor of all medications you’re taking
Important Information
Take Xatral XL with food at the same time each day for consistent absorption. Report any symptoms of orthostatic hypotension to your doctor. Regular follow-ups are important to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and any potential side effects. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
