Mupirocin Ointment 2% is a topical antibiotic medication that effectively treats bacterial skin infections. This prescription-strength ointment eliminates susceptible bacteria while providing a protective barrier over the affected area during the healing process.
Uses
Mupirocin Ointment 2% treats primary and secondary skin infections including impetigo, folliculitis, small wounds, cuts, scrapes, and minor burns infected with susceptible bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), Streptococcus pyogenes, and certain other Gram-positive organisms.
Benefits
- Effectively eliminates susceptible bacteria without systemic absorption
- Treats impetigo and other superficial skin infections
- Clears MRSA colonization, especially in nasal passages
- Reduces spread of contagious bacterial skin infections
- Provides targeted treatment with minimal systemic effects
- Creates protective barrier over healing skin
- Prevents secondary infections in minor wounds
- Demonstrates high cure rates for labeled indications
- Works where other topical antibiotics may fail
How It Works
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase enzyme. This prevents the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins, stopping bacterial growth and multiplication. The polyethylene glycol base helps deliver the medication while providing a protective barrier over wounds.
Dosage
Application Area | Application Amount | Treatment Duration |
---|---|---|
Skin infections | Small amount, 3× daily | 5-10 days |
Nasal MRSA | Pea-size, 2× daily | 5-7 days |
Apply a small amount to the affected area and may be covered with gauze if needed. Wash hands before and after application unless treating hand infections.
Duration of Action
Mupirocin begins working immediately upon application, with antibacterial activity lasting several hours per application. Most skin infections show improvement within 3-5 days, though complete treatment course should be followed. Maximum benefit typically requires 7-10 days of consistent application.
Side Effects
Most patients tolerate Mupirocin Ointment well. Common side effects include temporary burning, stinging, pain, or itching at the application site. Less commonly, patients may experience rash, nausea, headache, or secondary skin irritation. These reactions are typically mild and transient.
Warning
For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Discontinue use if severe irritation, allergic reaction, or worsening of infection occurs. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms. If no improvement after 3-5 days, reevaluation is necessary. Not for large open wounds or burns covering extensive areas.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Mupirocin Ointment can be used during pregnancy when clearly needed. Limited systemic absorption occurs, suggesting minimal risk to the fetus. May be used while breastfeeding, though avoid application to nipple area before nursing. Consult healthcare provider before using during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Interaction
- Minimal interaction with other medications due to limited systemic absorption
- Should not be mixed with other topical products at the same site
- May inactivate if mixed with certain antiseptics
- Potential decreased efficacy when used with certain wound cleansers
- May increase absorption of other topically applied medications
Precaution
Not for use in the eyes or for intranasal application unless specifically indicated. Avoid using on large areas of damaged skin or open wounds that could increase systemic absorption. Discontinue if sensitization or severe local irritation occurs. Kidney impairment may be a concern with widespread use due to polyethylene glycol base.
Important Information
Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve quickly. Consult healthcare provider if infection worsens or shows no improvement after 3-5 days. Store at room temperature away from excessive heat. Do not use after expiration date. Keep tube tightly closed when not in use. For external use only unless otherwise prescribed.
