Omezal Capsule 20mg contains Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid production. This medication effectively treats peptic ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other acid-related stomach conditions.
Uses
Omezal Capsule treats peptic ulcers, GERD, acid reflux, gastritis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It’s used for healing erosive esophagitis and preventing ulcers caused by NSAIDs or H. pylori bacteria. Omezal provides symptom relief from heartburn and acid indigestion.
Benefits
- Reduces stomach acid production effectively
- Provides rapid relief from heartburn and acid reflux
- Promotes healing of peptic ulcers and erosive esophagitis
- Prevents NSAID-induced ulcers
- Reduces risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding
- Improves quality of life in GERD patients
- Supports H. pylori eradication therapy
- Provides long-lasting acid suppression
- Well-tolerated with minimal side effects
How It Works
Omezal works by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen-potassium ATPase enzyme (proton pump) in stomach parietal cells. This action prevents the final step of acid production, significantly reducing gastric acid secretion for up to 24 hours after a single dose.

Duration of Action
Omezal begins reducing acid production within 1-2 hours of administration, with maximum effect reached within 2-4 days of regular use. Each dose provides acid suppression for approximately 24 hours. Full therapeutic benefits typically develop after 4-5 days of consistent use.
Side Effects
Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Some patients experience dizziness or fatigue. Long-term use may increase risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, or kidney problems. Most side effects are mild and resolve with continued use.
Warning
Long-term use of Omezal may increase risk of osteoporosis, kidney disease, and Clostridium difficile infections. Prolonged therapy can mask symptoms of gastric cancer. Do not use for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms. Consult doctor if symptoms persist after 14 days of treatment.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Omezal is generally considered safe during pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks. It’s classified as pregnancy category C. Small amounts pass into breast milk, but breastfeeding is usually considered safe. Consult healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Interaction
- May reduce effectiveness of clopidogrel and increase bleeding risk
- Can decrease absorption of iron, calcium, and vitamin B12
- May interact with warfarin, increasing bleeding risk
- Possible reduced effectiveness of certain antifungal medications
- May affect absorption of HIV protease inhibitors
- Can alter levels of phenytoin and diazepam
Precaution
Use with caution in patients with liver disease, osteoporosis, or low magnesium levels. Elderly patients may require lower doses. Gradual dose reduction may be necessary after long-term use. Monitor for signs of vitamin B12 deficiency during extended therapy.
Important Information
Omezal is not for immediate heartburn relief and may take several days to show full effect. Do not stop suddenly after long-term use as acid production may rebound. Maintain adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during long-term therapy. Report persistent stomach pain, difficulty swallowing, or unusual fatigue to your healthcare provider.
