Arthrotec is a combination medication containing Diclofenac (a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID) and Misoprostol (a prostaglandin analog). This dual-action formula provides effective pain relief while protecting the stomach from NSAID-induced ulcers and complications.

Arthrotec treats symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis in patients at high risk for developing NSAID-induced gastric or duodenal ulcers. It effectively manages pain, inflammation, and stiffness while reducing the risk of gastrointestinal complications.

How It Works

Diclofenac reduces pain and inflammation by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis through blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes. Misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog, protects the stomach lining by replacing depleted natural prostaglandins, increasing mucus production, and reducing acid secretion in the stomach.

Dosage

Duration of Action

Arthrotec begins providing anti-inflammatory effects within 30-60 minutes after administration. Pain relief typically lasts 8-12 hours, depending on formulation strength. Gastroprotective effects of misoprostol begin within 30 minutes and continue throughout treatment duration with regular dosing.

Side Effects

Common side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, flatulence, and headache. Diarrhea is usually mild and temporary. Serious but less common side effects include allergic reactions, gastrointestinal bleeding, cardiovascular events, liver or kidney problems, and fluid retention.

Warning

Arthrotec can increase risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke. NSAID component may cause GI bleeding despite protective misoprostol. Absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy due to misoprostol’s abortifacient properties. Not suitable for patients with aspirin-sensitive asthma or severe heart, liver, or kidney disease.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Arthrotec is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy as misoprostol can cause miscarriage, premature birth, or birth defects. Women of childbearing potential must use effective contraception and have a negative pregnancy test before starting therapy. Use during breastfeeding is not recommended as both components pass into breast milk.

Interaction
