Product overview

Description

Back-Up is a single dose emergency contraceptive pill that contains a synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel. It is a progestin, which is similar to the hormone progesterone that is naturally produced in the female body. Back-Up is a type of emergency contraception that can be taken within 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex, but it can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after in certain cases.

How Does Back-Up Work?

Back-Up works by preventing or delaying ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. It thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it harder for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg. If an egg has already been released, Back-Up can also prevent the sperm from fertilizing it by altering the lining of the uterus, making it harder for the fertilized egg to implant.

Is Back-Up Effective?

Back-Up is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, ideally within 72 hours. Studies have shown that Back-Up can prevent pregnancy in up to 95% of cases when taken within 24 hours after unprotected sex. However, the effectiveness decreases as time goes on. If taken within 72 hours, it can still prevent pregnancy in up to 85% of cases, and if taken between 72-120 hours, the effectiveness drops to around 58%.

It is important to note that Back-Up is not 100% effective and should not be used as a regular form of birth control. It is also not effective if you are already pregnant. If you have already missed your period or have symptoms of pregnancy, you should not take Back-Up.

How to Use Back-Up

Back-Up is available over the counter in most countries and can be purchased at a pharmacy without a prescription. It comes as a single pill, which should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. The pill should be taken orally with water. You should follow the instructions on the packaging carefully.

Side Effects of Back-Up

Back-Up is generally safe to use and has few side effects. However, some women may experience mild side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache, fatigue, dizziness, abdominal pain, or changes in menstrual bleeding. These side effects usually go away on their own and do not require medical attention. When to Seek Medical Attention If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy or prolonged bleeding, or other severe symptoms after taking Back-Up, you should seek medical attention immediately. These symptoms could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, which is a medical emergency.
