Back-Up Tablet is an emergency contraceptive containing 1.5mg of Levonorgestrel. This single-dose pill is designed for use after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent unintended pregnancy. It’s a progestin-only emergency contraceptive that’s effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.

Uses

Back-Up Tablet is used as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or when regular birth control methods have failed. It’s not intended for regular use as a primary form of contraception and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Benefits

  • Helps prevent unintended pregnancy
  • Single-dose convenience
  • Effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex
  • Can be used after contraceptive failure
  • Does not require a prescription in many countries
  • High efficacy rate when used correctly

How It Works

Levonorgestrel works primarily by preventing or delaying ovulation. It may also alter the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. However, it will not terminate an existing pregnancy.

Dosage

Take one tablet (1.5mg) as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. The earlier the tablet is taken, the more effective it is. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the tablet, another dose should be taken.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, and changes in menstrual bleeding. These are usually mild and resolve on their own. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe abdominal pain or unusually heavy bleeding.

Warning

Back-Up Tablet should not be used as a regular form of birth control. It does not protect against STIs. If your next menstrual period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test. Seek medical attention if you experience severe abdominal pain, as this could indicate an ectopic pregnancy.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

This medication is not intended for use during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before use. Levonorgestrel does pass into breast milk, but is not known to harm nursing infants.

Interaction

  • May interact with certain anti-seizure medications
  • Could interact with some HIV medications
  • Potential interactions with St. John’s Wort

Important Information

Back-Up Tablet is for emergency use only and should not replace regular contraception. It may be less effective in women weighing more than 75 kg (165 lbs). If you have any concerns or questions about using this medication, consult a healthcare professional. Always practice safe sex and use regular contraception methods to prevent unintended pregnancy and STIs.

    Hello Gift,

For the Back-Up Tablet (Levonorgestrel 1.5mg), you should take one tablet as a single dose for emergency contraception. Taking more than the recommended dose does not increase effectiveness and may lead to side effects.

  • To use Back-Up, or Levonorgestrel 1.5mg, follow the instructions on the packaging carefully. The pill should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, ideally within 72 hours (3 days). However, it can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after in certain cases.
  • The pill should be taken orally with water. It is important to take the pill as soon as possible after unprotected sex, as the effectiveness decreases with time. Back-Up is most effective when taken within 24 hours after unprotected sex.
  • It is important to note that Back-Up is not a regular form of birth control and should not be relied on as such. It is also not effective if you are already pregnant. If you have already missed your period or have symptoms of pregnancy, you should not take Back-Up.
If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy or prolonged bleeding, or other severe symptoms after taking Back-Up, you should seek medical attention immediately.
  • Remember, Back-Up does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so it is important to get tested and use a barrier method of contraception such as condoms in the future to protect yourself against STIs and unintended pregnancy. If you have any concerns or questions about using Back-Up, you should speak to a healthcare provider.
