Back-Up Tablet, also known as Levonorgestrel 1.5mg, is an emergency contraceptive pill that can be taken to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure
Back-Up Tablet is an emergency contraceptive containing 1.5mg of Levonorgestrel. This single-dose pill is designed for use after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent unintended pregnancy. It’s a progestin-only emergency contraceptive that’s effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
Uses
Back-Up Tablet is used as an emergency contraceptive to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or when regular birth control methods have failed. It’s not intended for regular use as a primary form of contraception and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Benefits
- Helps prevent unintended pregnancy
- Single-dose convenience
- Effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex
- Can be used after contraceptive failure
- Does not require a prescription in many countries
- High efficacy rate when used correctly
How It Works
Levonorgestrel works primarily by preventing or delaying ovulation. It may also alter the lining of the uterus to prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. However, it will not terminate an existing pregnancy.
Dosage
Take one tablet (1.5mg) as soon as possible within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. The earlier the tablet is taken, the more effective it is. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the tablet, another dose should be taken.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, and changes in menstrual bleeding. These are usually mild and resolve on their own. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe abdominal pain or unusually heavy bleeding.
Warning
Back-Up Tablet should not be used as a regular form of birth control. It does not protect against STIs. If your next menstrual period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test. Seek medical attention if you experience severe abdominal pain, as this could indicate an ectopic pregnancy.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
This medication is not intended for use during pregnancy. If you are breastfeeding, consult your healthcare provider before use. Levonorgestrel does pass into breast milk, but is not known to harm nursing infants.
Interaction
- May interact with certain anti-seizure medications
- Could interact with some HIV medications
- Potential interactions with St. John’s Wort
Important Information
Back-Up Tablet is for emergency use only and should not replace regular contraception. It may be less effective in women weighing more than 75 kg (165 lbs). If you have any concerns or questions about using this medication, consult a healthcare professional. Always practice safe sex and use regular contraception methods to prevent unintended pregnancy and STIs.
