To use chloramphenicol eye ointment, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Tilt your head back and look upward. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pouch. Squeeze a small amount of ointment into the pouch. Close your eye and gently massage your eyelid. Wipe away any excess ointment from around your eye.
Chloramphenicol eye ointment is usually used three to four times a day for 7 to 10 days. Do not use more than the recommended amount or use it for longer than directed by your doctor.
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before applying the ointment.
- Gently clean the affected area with a mild cleanser and water, if applicable. Pat the area dry with a clean towel.
- Squeeze a small amount of the ointment onto a clean fingertip or a sterile applicator. Use enough to cover the affected area with a thin layer.
- Carefully apply the ointment to the affected area. Avoid touching the tip of the tube or applicator to any surfaces to prevent contamination.
- If applying to the eyes, it is recommended to tilt your head back slightly and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Squeeze the ointment into the pocket without touching the eye or eyelashes.
- Close your eyes gently after applying the ointment to distribute it evenly over the eye's surface.
- If needed, use a clean tissue to wipe away any excess ointment from the surrounding area.
- Wash your hands again after applying the ointment, unless you have applied it to your hands.
- Do not use the ointment if the seal is broken or the ointment has expired.
- Keep the ointment out of the reach of children.
- Store the ointment in a cool, dry place.
- If you are using contact lenses, remove them before applying the ointment. Wait at least 15 minutes after applying the ointment before putting your contact lenses back in.
