Klovinal Vaginal Pessary is a unique combination medication containing clotrimazole (antifungal), metronidazole (antibiotic), and Lactobacillus spores (probiotic). This comprehensive formulation treats various vaginal infections while promoting overall vaginal health.
Uses
Klovinal Vaginal Pessary treats vulvovaginal candidiasis (yeast infections), bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, and mixed vaginal infections. It effectively combats conditions causing itching, burning, and abnormal discharge while restoring vaginal microbiome balance.
Benefits
- Offers combination therapy for comprehensive treatment
- Provides targeted delivery of active ingredients directly to infection site
- Supports vaginal microbiome restoration with beneficial probiotics
- Convenient and discreet self-administered treatment option
- Addresses multiple types of vaginal infections simultaneously
- Reduces need for multiple separate medications
- Promotes long-term vaginal health maintenance
- Minimizes systemic side effects through localized treatment
How It Works
Clotrimazole inhibits fungal cell wall synthesis to eliminate yeast infections. Metronidazole targets anaerobic bacteria causing bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. Lactobacillus spores help restore beneficial vaginal flora, creating an acidic environment that prevents reinfection and maintains healthy vaginal pH.
Dosage
Treatment Type | Standard Dosage | Treatment Duration |
---|---|---|
Standard Treatment | 1 pessary nightly | 6 days |
Severe Infections | 1 pessary nightly | 7-10 days |
Insert one Klovinal pessary deep into the vagina before bedtime. Use the provided applicator for proper placement.
Duration of Action
Klovinal begins working immediately upon insertion, with symptom relief typically occurring within 24-48 hours. The medication provides sustained release over 8-12 hours per dose. Complete infection clearance usually occurs within the 6-day treatment course, with microbiome restoration continuing for several weeks.
Side Effects
Common side effects include mild vaginal irritation, temporary discharge, and abdominal cramping. Some women may experience vaginal burning or itching initially. Rare but serious side effects include severe allergic reactions, persistent gastrointestinal disturbances, or neurological symptoms requiring immediate medical attention.
Warning
Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for 24 hours after completion due to metronidazole interaction. Do not use if allergic to any components. Klovinal may damage latex condoms and diaphragms. Consult healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or persist beyond treatment completion.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Consult healthcare provider before using Klovinal during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. The combination’s safety during breastfeeding is not fully established. Alternative treatments may be recommended for pregnant or nursing women depending on infection severity and gestational stage.
Interaction
- May reduce effectiveness of latex contraceptives and barrier methods
- Metronidazole component interacts with alcohol causing severe nausea
- Possible reduced efficacy when used with other vaginal medications simultaneously
- May interact with oral anticoagulants if systemically absorbed
- Could affect absorption of other vaginal treatments used concurrently
Precaution
Complete the full treatment course even if symptoms improve early. Avoid tampons, douches, or vaginal intercourse during treatment. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Store pessaries in a cool, dry place. Partners may require simultaneous treatment to prevent reinfection.
Important Information
Klovinal is available by prescription only and requires proper medical diagnosis before use. Inform healthcare provider of complete medical history including allergies and current medications. If symptoms persist after treatment completion, follow-up examination may be necessary to rule out other conditions. Maintain good vaginal hygiene practices to prevent future infections.

A
Hello Dorcas,
Klovinal is an antifungal, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal vaginal pessary used to treat infections. It does not prevent pregnancy, so you can still get pregnant while using it. However, if you’re treating an infection, it’s best to complete the treatment before trying to conceive.

Q How often should one treat infection even though it doesn’t reoccur Just to be safe and clean answer nowAsked by Sunflower on January 20, 2025 5:10 pmA
Hello Sunflower,
It's not necessary to treat an infection if there are no symptoms or recurring issues. Overusing medications like Klovinal Vaginal Pessary without a diagnosed infection can lead to resistance or disrupt the natural balance of your vaginal flora. It's best to maintain good hygiene and consult a doctor for regular check-ups or if any symptoms arise.

Q Can I pee some minutes later after inserting it answer nowAsked by Bola on January 16, 2025 9:13 pmA
Hello Bola,
Yes, it is generally okay to urinate after inserting a Klovinal vaginal pessary. However, it is recommended to allow some time for the pessary to dissolve or be absorbed before doing so. Urinating immediately after insertion may cause the pessary to move or not be as effective. To get the best results, try to insert the pessary before going to bed, allowing it to remain in place for a longer period without interruption. Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Hello Toyosi,
The recurrence of white thick discharge after completing treatment with Klovinal insert could indicate a persistent or recurrent infection, possibly a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. It is essential to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and appropriate treatment. They may recommend additional tests to determine the exact cause and prescribe the necessary medication.

Hello Kay,
It is possible that Klovinal vaginal inserts can cause a metallic taste in the mouth as a side effect, though this is uncommon. This can happen due to the absorption of the medication into the bloodstream, affecting taste perception. If the metallic taste persists or becomes bothersome, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider for further advice.

Hello Julie,
It's not uncommon to experience some discomfort when starting a new medication like Klovinal, but severe pelvic pain is something you should monitor closely. It could be related to the medication or another condition. If the pain persists or you're concerned about pregnancy or other health issues, it would be best to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

Hello Oje,
Hello, good evening. Based on your test results, Levofloxacin is highly sensitive for the urine infection but resistant in the HVS (high vaginal swab) result. Typically, it's crucial to treat each infection with the antibiotic that shows the highest sensitivity in the respective test results.
While Levofloxacin may effectively treat the urine infection, it might not be as effective for the vaginal infection due to the resistance indicated in the HVS results. Cefotaxime, which is highly sensitive in the HVS results, might be more appropriate for treating the vaginal infection.
Combining Levofloxacin with Klovinal may help address the infection, but since there is resistance to Levofloxacin in the HVS, it may not be the most effective approach. It would be best to consult your doctor or pharmacist to reassess the treatment plan, ensuring that both infections are adequately addressed with the most effective medications.
AHello Oje, good evening. Thank you for sharing your concern. It seems that there is a bit of confusion with your test results and the medications prescribed.
- Your HVS (High Vaginal Swab) result shows that Cefotaxime is highly sensitive, while Levofloxacin is resistant.
- Your Urine MCS (Microscopy, Culture, and Sensitivity) result shows that Levofloxacin is highly sensitive.
Since Levofloxacin is resistant on your HVS result, it may not effectively treat the vaginal infection. On the other hand, it should work well for the urinary tract infection as indicated by your urine test results.
Using Klovinal alongside might help with the vaginal infection due to its local action, but it’s best to follow up with your doctor or pharmacist. They can re-evaluate your treatment plan, possibly prescribing Cefotaxime for the vaginal infection and confirming if Levofloxacin is appropriate for the urinary tract infection.
Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure that you are on the most effective treatment for both infections.
Please is it normal to have a pink discharge and spotting blood few days after the use of Klonival. Hope it’s not something to be worried about and does Klonival treat a moderate growth of staphylococcus

Hello Damola,
It’s not unusual to experience mild spotting or pink discharge after using Klovinal; this is typically harmless. However, if the spotting persists or worsens, consult your doctor. Klovinal is not specifically for treating staphylococcus infections; you may need a different medication. It’s best to discuss this with your healthcare provider.
ARocephin (Ceftriaxone) can be effective in treating some staphylococcal infections, particularly if caused by susceptible strains. However, it may not be effective against resistant strains like MRSA (Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). It’s important to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and sensitivity testing to determine the most effective antibiotic for your specific infection.
