Abbott Haemaccel Infusion is a 3.5% colloidal infusion solution of polygeline with electrolytes, designed for intravenous administration. It’s used as a plasma expander for volume replacement in various clinical situations.

Uses

Haemaccel is primarily used for:

  • Treatment of hypovolemia
  • Prevention and treatment of shock
  • Volume replacement during surgery
  • Treatment of burn injuries
  • Plasma exchange procedures

Benefits

  • Rapid and effective plasma volume expansion
  • Balanced electrolyte composition
  • No refrigeration required (store below 25°C)
  • Does not require blood type matching
  • Lower risk of anaphylactic reactions compared to other colloids
  • Suitable for emergency situations

How It Works

Polygeline, a cross-linked gelatin, acts as a plasma expander by increasing oncotic pressure, drawing fluid into the intravascular space. The electrolyte composition helps maintain physiological balance.

Dosage

Dosage depends on the clinical situation, patient’s condition, and degree of volume depletion. Typically administered intravenously at a rate determined by the healthcare provider. Always follow the prescribing physician’s instructions.

Side Effects

May include allergic reactions, fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, or rarely, anaphylactic reactions. Monitor for signs of allergic reactions during infusion.

Warning

Use with caution in patients with heart or kidney failure, severe liver disease, or bleeding disorders. Not recommended for patients with known hypersensitivity to gelatin products.

Interactions

It may interact with certain medications. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and medical conditions.

Important Information

For intravenous use only. Use immediately after opening. Do not use if the solution is cloudy or contains particles. Monitor vital signs during administration. Single-use only; discard unused portion.
