Camosunate Junior Tablet is an antimalarial combination medication containing Artesunate (100mg) and Amodiaquine (300mg). Designed specifically for children aged 7-13 years, this artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) effectively treats acute uncomplicated malaria in pediatric populations.

Uses

Camosunate Junior Tablet treats acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in children aged 7-13 years. It’s effective against drug-resistant strains and provides rapid symptom relief while preventing recrudescence. This medication is commonly used in malaria-endemic regions.

Benefits

  • Provides fast clearance of malaria parasites
  • Effective against drug-resistant malaria strains
  • Reduces fever and symptoms quickly
  • Prevents recurrence with dual-action formula
  • Specifically dosed for pediatric patients
  • Simple color-coded dosing system (yellow and white tablets)
  • Shorter treatment duration compared to monotherapy
  • High cure rates in pediatric populations
  • Age-appropriate formulation

How It Works

Artesunate rapidly kills blood-stage parasites by generating free radicals toxic to the malaria parasite, quickly reducing parasite load and fever. Amodiaquine eliminates remaining parasites and has a longer half-life, preventing recrudescence. This complementary action ensures effective parasite clearance and reduced resistance development.

Dosage

Age GroupDosage Instructions
7 – 13 yearsTake 2 tablets daily (1 yellow + 1 white) for 3 consecutive days

Take both tablets at the same time once daily with water and a light meal to improve absorption and reduce stomach irritation.

Duration of Action

Camosunate Junior begins working within hours of the first dose, with fever typically subsiding within 24-36 hours. Parasite clearance occurs within 48-72 hours. Artesunate has a short half-life providing immediate action, while Amodiaquine offers protection against recurrence for approximately 1-2 weeks.

Side Effects

Most children tolerate Camosunate Junior well. Common side effects include mild nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Less common effects include dizziness, headache, and abdominal discomfort. These typically resolve as treatment progresses. Serious adverse effects are rare but may include blood disorders or liver effects.

Warning

Complete the full 3-day treatment course even if symptoms improve quickly. Seek immediate medical attention if the child experiences unusual bleeding, severe vomiting, difficulty breathing, or unusual skin reactions. Not recommended for children with known hypersensitivity to either component or with severe hepatic impairment.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Not applicable for the intended age group (7-13 years). For adolescent females who may be pregnant, consult healthcare provider for appropriate antimalarial therapy.

Interaction

  • May interact with medications that affect heart rhythm
  • Possible reduced efficacy with certain anticonvulsants
  • May enhance effects of medications that lower blood sugar
  • Potential interaction with medications metabolized by liver enzymes
  • Avoid concurrent use with halofantrine

Precaution

Use with caution in children with liver or kidney impairment. Monitor for signs of blood disorders during treatment. Ensure accurate diagnosis of malaria before administration. The child should avoid strenuous activity during treatment. If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of dosing, repeat the dose. Ensure proper hydration throughout treatment.

Important Information

Camosunate Junior does not prevent malaria transmission. Continue protective measures against mosquito bites. If symptoms persist after the treatment course, seek medical attention promptly. Store below 30°C in the original package, protected from light and moisture. Keep medication out of reach of younger children. The distinct yellow and white tablets help ensure proper dosing.
