How It Works
Clotrimazole disrupts fungal cell membrane formation by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis, an essential component of fungal cell walls. This action increases cell membrane permeability, causing leakage of cellular contents and ultimately fungal cell death, effectively eliminating the infection without significantly affecting human cells.
Dosage
Condition | Application Method | Treatment Duration |
---|---|---|
Vaginal yeast infections | Insert applicatorful into vagina | 3-7 days, once daily |
Skin fungal infections | Apply thin layer to affected area | 2-4 weeks, twice daily |
Apply Mycoten as directed, typically continuing for 1-2 weeks after symptom resolution to prevent recurrence.
Duration of Action
Mycoten begins working upon application, with initial symptom relief often occurring within 24-48 hours. Complete resolution of infection typically requires the full treatment course. In vaginal infections, symptoms usually improve within 3 days, while skin infections may require 1-2 weeks for noticeable improvement.
Side Effects
Most patients tolerate Mycoten well. Common side effects include mild burning, stinging, or irritation at application site. For vaginal use, some patients report pelvic discomfort or increased discharge. Serious allergic reactions are rare but may include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing.
Warning
Discontinue use and consult healthcare provider if irritation, sensitivity, or worsening of symptoms occurs. Do not use internal applicator during pregnancy without medical guidance. For external use only except for vaginal applications with provided applicator. Keep away from eyes. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or rectal use.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Consult healthcare provider before using Mycoten during pregnancy, particularly for vaginal applications in the first trimester. External applications are generally considered safe. While clotrimazole is minimally absorbed systemically, breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before use.
Interaction
- May reduce effectiveness of latex products such as condoms
- Possible interaction with vaginal contraceptive products
- May interact with other topical medications if applied concurrently
- Possible increased absorption with occlusive dressings
