Ofloxacin eyedrop is a type of antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It is available as a prescription medication and comes in a bottle with an eye dropper.

Ofloxacin eye drops work by killing the bacteria that are causing the infection. It does this by interfering with the bacteria’s DNA, which prevents them from reproducing.

Ofloxacin eye drops are usually used to treat conjunctivitis, which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis is a common condition that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergies.

Ofloxacin eye drops can also be used to treat corneal ulcers, which are open sores on the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. Corneal ulcers can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or injuries.

To use ofloxacin eye drops, wash your hands with soap and water. Tilt your head back and look up at the ceiling. Hold the dropper close to your eye and squeeze out one drop into the lower eyelid. Close your eye gently and roll your eye around to spread the drops evenly.

Use ofloxacin eye drops as directed by your doctor. Usually, you will need to use the drops four times a day for 7 to 10 days.

Do not use ofloxacin eye drops if you are allergic to ofloxacin or any other ingredient in the drops. Do not use the drops if the bottle is damaged or if the expiration date has passed.

Some of the common side effects of ofloxacin eye drops include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Redness, itching, or swelling of the eyes
  • Tearing
  • Sensitivity to light
The dosage of ofloxacin eye drops can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the instructions provided by your healthcare provider. It's important to follow your doctor's instructions or the information on the medication label. The dosage typically recommended for adults and children is as follows:
  1. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye):
    • Mild to moderate infections: Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours for the first 2 days, then reduce the frequency to 4 times a day for 5 more days.
    • Severe infections: Instill 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 15 minutes for the first 6 hours, then reduce the frequency to 2 drops every 30 minutes for the rest of the day. On the second day, instill 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every hour. From the third day onward, instill 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours for 5 more days.
  2. Corneal Ulcers:
    • Instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 30 minutes while awake for the first 24 to 48 hours.
    • After the initial 24 to 48 hours, instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every hour while awake for the next week.
    • After the first week, instill 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 4 hours while awake for 2 more weeks.
To use ofloxacin eye drops, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling the eye drops.
  2. Shake the bottle well to ensure the medication is properly mixed.
  3. Remove the cap from the bottle.
  4. Tilt your head back slightly or lie down on your back with your face upward.
  5. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  6. Hold the bottle upside down, close to your eye, and squeeze it to release the prescribed number of drops into the pocket created by pulling down your lower eyelid. Be careful not to touch your eye, eyelid, lashes, or any other surface with the tip of the bottle to prevent contamination.
  7. Release the lower eyelid and close your eyes gently.
  8. Press lightly on the inner corner of your eye (near the nose) with a clean fingertip. This helps to prevent the eye drops from draining into the tear ducts and being absorbed systemically.
  9. Keep your eyes closed and tilt your head forward slightly, allowing the drops to spread across the eye surface.
  10. If you need to instill more than one drop, wait for a few minutes between each drop to allow the previous drop to be absorbed.
  11. If excess liquid is on your face, wipe it away gently with a clean tissue.
  12. Repeat the process for the other eye if both eyes require treatment.
  13. Recap the bottle tightly.
Remember to follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the information on the medication label. The dosage and frequency of administration may vary depending on the condition being treated. If you have any questions or concerns about how to use the eye drops, consult your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.
