P-Alaxin DS 80/640 Tablet is an antimalarial medication containing Dihydroartemisinin (80 mg) and Piperaquine Phosphate (640 mg). This combination therapy effectively treats acute uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria, including drug-resistant strains.

Uses

P-Alaxin DS Tablet treats acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. It’s effective against chloroquine-resistant strains and can be used for both treatment and prevention in endemic areas. The medication is suitable for adults and children weighing above 25 kg.

Benefits

  • Provides rapid clearance of malaria parasites
  • Effective against drug-resistant Plasmodium strains
  • Reduces fever and malaria symptoms quickly
  • Prevents recrudescence with extended half-life
  • Requires shorter treatment duration
  • Demonstrates high cure rates
  • Reduces risk of severe malaria complications
  • Well-tolerated compared to many antimalarials
  • Suitable for use in endemic regions

How It Works

Dihydroartemisinin rapidly kills blood-stage parasites through free radical generation, providing quick symptom relief. Piperaquine phosphate has a longer half-life and eliminates remaining parasites while preventing reinfection. This dual-action approach ensures effective parasite clearance and reduces recurrence risk.

Dosage

Age/WeightNumber of TabletsDuration
8-12 yrs (25 to < 36 kg)1 tablet daily at oncefor 3 days
12-15 yrs (36 to < 60 kg)1½ tablets daily at oncefor 3 days
15-18 yrs (60 to < 80 kg)2 tablets daily at oncefor 3 days
Adults (> 80 kg)2½ tablets daily at oncefor 3 days

Take P-Alaxin DS with water at the same time each day, preferably with food to enhance absorption and reduce stomach irritation.

Duration of Action

P-Alaxin DS begins working within hours of the first dose, with fever typically subsiding within 24-48 hours. Dihydroartemisinin clears most parasites within 48 hours, while Piperaquine provides protection against recurrence for 4-5 weeks due to its long half-life.

Side Effects

Most patients tolerate P-Alaxin DS well. Common side effects include mild headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea or diarrhea. Less common effects include fatigue, muscle pain, or temporary heart rhythm changes. These typically resolve without intervention.

Warning

Complete the full 3-day course even if symptoms improve. P-Alaxin DS may prolong the QT interval in some patients, potentially causing cardiac arrhythmias. Avoid in patients with known QT prolongation or taking medications that affect heart rhythm. Seek medical attention for severe vomiting, irregular heartbeat, or convulsions.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

P-Alaxin DS can be used in the second and third trimesters if benefits outweigh risks. Use in first trimester only if no alternatives exist and malaria poses life-threatening risk. Limited data exists on breastfeeding safety, though benefits typically outweigh risks in malaria-endemic regions.

Interaction

  • May increase risk of QT prolongation with certain antiarrhythmics
  • Potential reduced effectiveness with some anticonvulsants
  • Possible interaction with antiretroviral medications
  • May alter effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives
  • Grapefruit juice may increase drug concentration levels

Precaution

Use with caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment, cardiac conditions, or electrolyte abnormalities. Monitor patients with history of seizures. Avoid in those with previous allergic reactions to artemisinin derivatives. Proper diagnosis of P. falciparum infection should be confirmed before treatment when possible.

Important Information

P-Alaxin DS does not prevent transmission of malaria to others. Continue using protective measures against mosquito bites. If vomiting occurs within one hour of taking dose, repeat the dose. Consult healthcare provider if symptoms persist after completing treatment course. Store below 30°C in original packaging, protected from light and moisture.

    Hello Nadia,

P-Alaxin DS is generally safe for patients with ulcer since it does not irritate the stomach lining like NSAIDs or some antibiotics. However, it’s best taken after food to reduce any stomach discomfort. If you have severe ulcer symptoms, please let your doctor know before starting.
