Sporidex Suspension 125mg is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic in an oral suspension form. It provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity while ensuring optimal bioavailability and therapeutic effectiveness, particularly suitable for pediatric use.

Uses

Sporidex Suspension 125mg effectively treats various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, ear infections (otitis media), skin and soft tissue infections like cellulitis and impetigo, urinary tract infections, and bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis).

Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
  • Excellent tissue penetration for optimal delivery to infection sites
  • Favorable safety profile with lower risk of adverse effects
  • Convenient oral suspension formulation improving patient compliance
  • Suitable for pediatric patients and those who cannot swallow tablets
  • Rapid onset of action for timely relief
  • Well-established efficacy profile
  • High oral bioavailability

How It Works

Sporidex Suspension works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Cefalexin inhibits enzymes responsible for cross-linking the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell walls, leading to structural weakness, cell lysis, and bacterial death.

Duration of Action

The antibiotic reaches peak plasma concentrations within 1 hour after administration. Its effects typically last 6-8 hours, with a half-life of approximately 1 hour in patients with normal renal function.

Dosage

Category Dosage Instructions Maximum Daily Dose
Infants (Under 1 year) 2.5ml every 6 hours 40 mg/kg
Children (1–6 years) 5ml every 6 hours 1 gram
Children (7–12 years) 10ml every 6 hours 2 grams
Adolescents (12 years and above) 10–20ml every 6 hours (based on severity of infection) 4 grams
Adults 500mg every 6–12 hours (equivalent to 20ml every 6 hours or 40ml every 12 hours) 4 grams

Warnings

Do not use in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics. Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy due to potential cross-reactivity. Prolonged use may result in superinfection. Discontinue if significant adverse reactions occur.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Allergic reactions ranging from skin rashes to anaphylaxis may occur in susceptible individuals. Transient liver enzyme elevations and changes in blood cell counts have been reported.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Sporidex Suspension should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefalexin passes into breast milk in small amounts. Consult a healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Interactions

  • Probenecid (increases cefalexin blood levels)
  • Metformin (may affect blood glucose control)
  • Oral contraceptives (potential reduced effectiveness)
  • Warfarin (possible enhanced anticoagulant effect)
  • Nephrotoxic drugs (increased risk of kidney damage)
  • Bacteriostatic antibiotics (may reduce efficacy)

Precautions

Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve. Shake well before each use. Store suspension in refrigerator after reconstitution. Use within 14 days. Monitor renal function in patients with kidney impairment. Adjust dosage in patients with severe renal insufficiency.

Important Information

Sporidex Suspension should be used judiciously to prevent antibiotic resistance. Take at evenly spaced intervals to maintain consistent antibiotic levels. This medication treats bacterial infections only, not viral infections. Report persistent diarrhea as it may indicate a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.

We’ve already indicated in the dosage section that children under 1 year should take 2.5ml as a general dosage. However, for a more tailored dosage based on your baby’s weight or specific condition, we strongly recommend consulting your doctor or pediatrician.
