How It Works
Ampicillin works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan, an essential component of bacterial cell walls. This leads to cell lysis and bacterial death, effectively eliminating the infection.
Duration of Action
The medication typically begins working within 1-2 hours after administration. Peak blood levels are reached in 2 hours. The effects last for 6-8 hours, which is why multiple daily doses are usually required for complete treatment.
Dosage
Adults and children over 12 years: 500mg every 6 hours. Children (under 12 years): Dosage based on weight and infection severity. Treatment duration typically ranges from 7-14 days depending on infection type and severity. Take on an empty stomach, 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.
Side Effects
Most common side effects of Vitacillin 500mg include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash, stomach upset, and oral thrush. Less common side effects may include headache, dizziness, and changes in taste sensation.
Warning
Stop Vitacillin 500mg and seek immediate medical attention if signs of allergic reaction occur (rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing). Complete the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve.
