Amoxil Beecham 250mg, containing Amoxicillin, is a broad-spectrum antibiotic in the penicillin family used to treat various bacterial infections in adults and children, including typhoid fever.
Uses
Amoxil Beecham 250mg is prescribed to treat respiratory tract infections, ear, nose, and throat infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, dental infections, Helicobacter pylori infections in combination therapy, and typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi.
Benefits
- Broad-spectrum antibacterial activity
- Effective against many common bacterial infections, including typhoid fever
- Generally well-tolerated by most patients
- Available in various forms (capsules, tablets, suspension)
- Suitable for both adults and children (with appropriate dosing)
- Effective treatment option for typhoid fever, particularly in areas with antibiotic-resistant strains
How It Works
Amoxicillin inhibits bacterial growth by interfering with the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, causing bacteria to weaken and die, allowing the body’s immune system to more effectively fight off the infection. This mechanism is effective against Salmonella typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever.
Dosage
For most infections, the typical adult dosage is 250-500mg every 8 hours or 500-875mg every 12 hours. For typhoid fever, higher doses may be prescribed, such as 1g three times daily for 14 days. Children’s dosage is based on body weight. Always follow your healthcare provider’s specific instructions.
Duration of Action
Amoxicillin begins working quickly, with some patients experiencing symptom improvement within 1-2 days. For typhoid fever, treatment usually lasts 14 days. Complete the entire prescribed course to ensure complete infection eradication and prevent antibiotic resistance.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and headache. Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, or liver problems. Seek immediate medical attention for severe or unusual symptoms.
Warning
Do not use if allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins. Inform your healthcare provider of any allergies or medical conditions before starting treatment. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can occur, potentially leading to more serious conditions.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Amoxicillin is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but always consult your healthcare provider before use, especially when treating typhoid fever.
Interactions
- May reduce oral contraceptives’ effectiveness
- Potential interaction with anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin)
- May increase rash risk when used with allopurinol
- Possible interaction with probenecid, increasing amoxicillin levels
Important Information
Complete the entire prescribed course of antibiotics, even if you feel better before it’s finished. This is particularly crucial for typhoid fever treatment to prevent relapse and carrier state. Take with or without food. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip the missed dose if it’s almost time for your next one. Do not double the dose. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
