Fortide Inhaler is a combination medication containing Budesonide (200mcg) and Formoterol (6mcg). This dual-action inhaler provides both anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator effects for long-term asthma and COPD management.
Uses
Fortide Inhaler is prescribed for long-term maintenance treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It prevents bronchospasm, reduces airway inflammation, and controls symptoms in patients requiring both inhaled corticosteroids and long-acting beta-agonists.
Benefits
- Provides dual anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator action
- Reduces frequency and severity of asthma attacks
- Improves lung function and breathing capacity
- Decreases need for rescue inhalers
- Controls chronic respiratory symptoms effectively
- Reduces airway inflammation and hyperreactivity
- Enhances exercise tolerance and quality of life
- Prevents nocturnal asthma symptoms
- Suitable for maintenance therapy
How It Works
Budesonide, a corticosteroid, reduces airway inflammation, mucus production, and hyperreactivity. Formoterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist, relaxes bronchial smooth muscles and provides sustained bronchodilation for up to 12 hours. This combination addresses both inflammatory and bronchoconstrictor components of respiratory diseases.
Dosage
Patient Age | Standard Dosage | Maximum Daily Dosage |
---|---|---|
Adults/Adolescents 12+ | 2 puffs twice daily | 4 puffs twice daily |
Children 6-11 years | 1 puff twice daily | 2 puffs twice daily |
Use Fortide Inhaler at the same times each day, preferably morning and evening. Rinse mouth after use to prevent oral thrush.
Duration of Action
Fortide Inhaler begins working within minutes of inhalation, with Formoterol providing quick bronchodilation. Full anti-inflammatory effects from Budesonide develop over several days to weeks. Each dose provides bronchodilation for approximately 12 hours, making twice-daily dosing effective for continuous control.
Side Effects
Common side effects include throat irritation, hoarseness, oral thrush, headache, and tremor. Some patients may experience palpitations, muscle cramps, or cough. Long-term high-dose use may cause systemic corticosteroid effects like bone thinning or growth suppression in children.
Warning
Fortide Inhaler is not for treating acute asthma attacks or sudden breathing problems. Use a rescue inhaler for acute symptoms. May increase risk of respiratory infections including pneumonia in COPD patients. Don’t stop abruptly without medical supervision as this may worsen symptoms.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Fortide Inhaler can be used during pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks, as uncontrolled asthma poses greater dangers. It’s generally considered safe during breastfeeding with minimal transfer into breast milk. Consult healthcare provider for proper asthma management during pregnancy.
Interaction
- May interact with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors increasing corticosteroid effects
- Potential increased cardiovascular effects with other beta-agonists
- Possible interaction with certain antifungal medications
- May enhance effects when used with other bronchodilators
- Potential for increased side effects with certain antibiotics
Precaution
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or osteoporosis. Monitor growth in children using long-term therapy. Patients with active respiratory infections should be treated appropriately. Regular monitoring of lung function and bone density may be required.
Important Information
Fortide Inhaler requires proper inhalation technique for effectiveness. Clean inhaler regularly and track remaining doses. Don’t exceed prescribed dosage as this increases side effects without improving efficacy. Continue use even when feeling well unless directed otherwise. Store below 25°C and protect from freezing.
