Seretide Diskus 50/250 mcg is a combination inhaler containing salmeterol (a long-acting bronchodilator) and fluticasone propionate (an inhaled corticosteroid). This dual-action medication is designed to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by both opening airways and reducing inflammation.

Uses

Seretide Diskus is used to treat and manage symptoms of asthma and COPD in adults. It helps prevent and control asthma symptoms such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing. In COPD, it aids in relieving symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness.

Benefits

  • Provides dual-action treatment for respiratory conditions
  • Helps open airways for easier breathing
  • Reduces inflammation in the lungs
  • Offers long-lasting symptom relief (up to 12 hours)
  • May reduce the frequency of asthma attacks
  • Improves overall lung function in COPD patients
  • Potentially reduces the need for rescue inhalers

How it works

Seretide Diskus combines two active ingredients:

  1. Salmeterol: A long-acting bronchodilator that helps keep airways open for at least 12 hours, making breathing easier.
  2. Fluticasone propionate: An inhaled corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the lungs, decreasing the risk of asthma attacks and improving COPD symptoms.

Dosage

The typical dosage is one inhalation twice daily, usually in the morning and evening. Always follow your doctor’s instructions regarding dosage and frequency. It’s important to use Seretide Diskus regularly, even when you’re not experiencing symptoms, to maintain its effectiveness.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include throat irritation, hoarseness, headache, and minor throat infections. Less common but more serious side effects can include increased heart rate, tremors, or allergic reactions. If you experience severe side effects, seek medical attention immediately.

Warning

Seretide Diskus should not be used as a rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. Patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to milk proteins should use this medication with caution. Long-term use of inhaled corticosteroids may affect growth in children, so regular monitoring is necessary.

Interactions

Seretide may interact with certain medications, including beta-blockers, diuretics, and some antifungal drugs. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Important Information

Rinse your mouth with water after each use to reduce the risk of oral thrush. Do not stop using Seretide Diskus abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this may worsen your condition. Regular check-ups are important to monitor your response to the medication and adjust the dosage if necessary.

Recommended doses

Adults and adolescents 12 years and older:-
  • Two inhalations twice daily.
Children 4 years and older:-
  • Two inhalations twice daily.
  • There are no data available for use of SERETIDE in children aged under 4 years.
Patients should be made aware that SERETIDE must be used regularly for optimum benefit, even when asymptomatic. Increased hospitalizations, emergency room visits, and medication use have all been linked with critical inhalation errors. The relationship between inhaler technique and symptom control is even recognized by guidelines. It is therefore vital that your patients have an asthma device they not only find easy to use but that they can rely on.

Here are the steps on how to use a Seretide inhaler:

  1. Remove the mouthpiece cover.
  2. Shake the inhaler vigorously for 5 seconds.
  3. Hold the inhaler upright with the mouthpiece facing down.
  4. Breathe out as much air as you comfortably can.
  5. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips tightly around it.
  6. As you start to breathe in slowly and deeply, press down firmly on the top of the inhaler once.
  7. Hold your breath for 10 seconds.
  8. Remove the inhaler from your mouth and breathe out slowly.
  9. Repeat steps 4-8 for your second puff, if needed.
  10. Put the mouthpiece cover back on.

It is important to follow these steps carefully in order to get the most benefit from your inhaler. If you are having trouble using your inhaler, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Here are some additional tips for using a Seretide inhaler:

  • Practice using your inhaler before you need it. This will help you get used to the steps involved and make it more likely that you will use it correctly when you need it.
  • If you are using a spacer device, make sure that it is clean and dry.
  • If you are using an MDI inhaler, make sure that you prime it before you use it for the first time or if you have not used it in a while. To prime the inhaler, remove the mouthpiece cover and shake it vigorously for 5 seconds. Then, press down on the top of the inhaler once, even if you do not feel any medicine coming out. This will help to ensure that the medicine is delivered properly.
  • If you are using an MDI inhaler, do not shake it too hard. Shaking it too hard can damage the inhaler and make it less effective.
  • Store your inhaler in a cool, dry place.
  • Do not use your inhaler if it is damaged or expired.
