Lever Artesunate 60mg Injection is a parenteral artemisinin derivative formulated for emergency treatment of severe malaria. This potent medication rapidly reduces parasite load and is particularly effective against Plasmodium falciparum, including drug-resistant strains.

Uses

Lever Artesunate 60mg Injection is primarily used for treatment of severe and complicated malaria. It is particularly indicated for patients with severe P. falciparum infections, cerebral malaria, patients unable to take oral medications, and cases where rapid reduction of parasite load is critical for patient survival.

Benefits

  • Rapid parasite clearance
  • Effective against drug-resistant strains
  • Reduces mortality in severe malaria
  • Fast-acting initial response
  • Life-saving in critical cases
  • Suitable when oral therapy isn’t possible
  • Effective against cerebral malaria
  • Compatible with subsequent oral antimalarial therapy

How It Works

Lever Artesunate 60mg Injection rapidly converts to dihydroartemisinin in the body, which interferes with parasite protein synthesis. It specifically targets the parasite’s ability to digest hemoglobin and disrupts its membrane function through the generation of reactive oxygen species, leading to parasite death.

Duration of Action

The medication demonstrates rapid onset of action within 1 hour of administration. Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 0.5-1.5 hours, requiring repeat dosing for complete treatment. Significant parasite reduction typically occurs within 24 hours of initial dose.

Dosage

Patient CategoryRecommended DosageAdministration Schedule
Adults and children ≥20kg2.4mg/kg0, 12, 24, then daily
Children <20kg3.0mg/kg0, 12, 24, then daily
Pregnant women2.4mg/kg0, 12, 24, then daily

Warnings

Hypersensitivity reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported. Post-treatment hemolysis may occur up to several weeks after therapy. Patients should be monitored for recrudescence of infection for at least 4 weeks. Not recommended for prophylactic use due to short half-life.

Side Effects

Common side effects include mild gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, headache, and injection site reactions. Serious adverse effects may include delayed hemolytic anemia, hypersensitivity reactions, transient neurological symptoms, and temporary ECG abnormalities including QT prolongation.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Lever Artesunate 60mg Injection can be used during all trimesters of pregnancy when treating severe malaria, as the benefits outweigh potential risks. No specific dosage adjustment is required during pregnancy. It is considered compatible with breastfeeding.

Interactions

  • Antiarrhythmic drugs (potential QT prolongation)
  • QT-prolonging medications (additive effects)
  • Antiretroviral medications (possible reduced efficacy)
  • CYP2A6 inhibitors (increased artesunate concentrations)
  • CYP2C19 inducers (reduced efficacy)
  • Other antimalarials (enhanced efficacy when used in sequential therapy)

Precautions

Reconstitute using the provided solvent immediately before use. Discard unused solution. Monitor complete blood count and renal function during treatment. Follow with a complete course of appropriate oral antimalarial therapy. Patient should be monitored for recurrence of infection for at least 28 days.

Important Information

Lever Artesunate 60mg Injection is intended for hospital use under medical supervision. It should be administered as soon as possible when severe malaria is suspected, even without laboratory confirmation in emergency situations. Treatment should be followed by a complete course of appropriate oral antimalarial therapy.
