Midlife Meropenem Injection 1000mg is a potent broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the carbapenem class. This injectable medication offers powerful antimicrobial activity against a wide range of gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria. Designed for intravenous administration, Midlife Meropenem provides effective treatment for severe bacterial infections.

Uses

Midlife Meropenem Injection is primarily used to treat serious bacterial infections, including:

  • Complicated intra-abdominal infections
  • Complicated skin and soft tissue infections
  • Community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonia
  • Complicated urinary tract infections
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Septicemia
  • Febrile neutropenia

Benefits

  • Ultra-broad spectrum antibacterial activity
  • Effective against many multi-drug resistant bacteria
  • Rapid bactericidal action
  • Good tissue penetration
  • Lower risk of seizures compared to other carbapenems
  • Suitable for both adult and pediatric patients
  • Preserves normal intestinal flora better than some antibiotics

How It Works

Meropenem binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cell walls, inhibiting cell wall synthesis. This action leads to bacterial cell lysis and death. Its unique structure provides stability against many beta-lactamases, including extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs).

Dosage

The typical adult dose is 500mg to 1000mg administered intravenously every 8 hours, depending on the type and severity of infection. Dosage may be adjusted based on renal function. Always follow your doctor’s specific dosing instructions.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, and injection site reactions. Rarely, more serious side effects such as seizures or allergic reactions may occur. Consult your healthcare provider if you experience any unusual or severe symptoms.

Warning

Midlife Meropenem should only be used under close medical supervision. Immediate medical attention is required if signs of an allergic reaction occur. Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Midlife Meropenem should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

Interaction

  • May reduce serum valproic acid levels
  • Probenecid can increase meropenem plasma levels
  • Potential for increased risk of seizures when used with valproic acid
  • May interfere with certain laboratory tests (e.g., Coombs test)

Important Information

Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve. Inform your doctor of any allergies, especially to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Regular monitoring of liver and kidney function may be necessary during treatment. Store at room temperature, protected from light. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately.

Age Group Indication Dosage and Frequency
Adults Severe Infections (e.g., pneumonia, septicemia) 1 gram every 8 hours, administered intravenously (IV) over 15-30 minutes.
Children (≥3 months) Moderate to Severe Infections 10-40 mg/kg every 8 hours, IV, based on infection severity (Max: 2 grams/day).
Neonates (0-3 months) Bacterial Infections 20 mg/kg every 12 hours, IV for less than 2 kg body weight; 20 mg/kg every 8 hours for more than 2 kg.
Renal Impairment Adjusted Dose Dose adjustment may be required based on creatinine clearance levels.
How to Use:
  1. Administration: Meropenem Injection is administered intravenously, either as an infusion over 15-30 minutes or as a bolus injection over approximately 5 minutes. It should only be given under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
  2. Preparation: Reconstitute the injection with a suitable diluent (such as sterile water for injection or 0.9% sodium chloride). The concentration after reconstitution should be appropriate for the method of administration.
    • For a bolus injection, use sterile water for injection (5 mL per 500 mg of Meropenem).
    • For an infusion, use an appropriate IV fluid (such as normal saline or 5% dextrose) and administer over 15-30 minutes.
  3. Frequency: The frequency and dosage depend on the type and severity of the infection, the patient's age, kidney function, and the healthcare provider's discretion.
Precautions:
  • Check for known allergies to beta-lactam antibiotics.
  • Monitor for signs of an allergic reaction, gastrointestinal discomfort, or changes in liver or kidney function.
  • Ensure proper renal dose adjustments are made to prevent toxicity, especially in patients with impaired renal function.
Always consult with a healthcare professional for specific dosing and administration instructions.
