Ezcef Dry Syrup is an oral antibiotic suspension containing Cefixime 100mg per 5ml when reconstituted. This broad-spectrum antibiotic effectively treats various bacterial infections with convenient once or twice daily dosing for children.
Uses
Ezcef Dry Syrup treats bacterial infections including upper and lower respiratory tract infections, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis, urinary tract infections, uncomplicated gonorrhea, and typhoid fever in pediatric patients.
Benefits
- Broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage
- Effective against many resistant strains
- Once or twice daily dosing
- Palatable pediatric formulation
- High oral bioavailability
- Extended half-life
- Minimal side effect profile
- Good penetration into tissues
How It Works
Ezcef Dry Syrup works by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins inside bacterial cell walls. This inhibits cell wall synthesis, disrupts bacterial growth, and ultimately causes bacterial cell death. Cefixime is particularly effective against gram-negative bacteria.
Duration of Action
After administration, Cefixime reaches peak plasma concentrations within 2-6 hours. The elimination half-life is approximately 3-4 hours in children with normal renal function, allowing for convenient once or twice daily dosing.
Dosage
Age Group | Recommended Dosage | Frequency |
---|---|---|
Infants > 6 months | 1.5-3 ml | Twice daily |
Children 1-5 years | 2.5-5 ml | Twice daily |
Children 5-10 years | 5-10 ml | Once or twice daily |
Children >10 years | 10-15 ml | Once daily |
Warnings
Hypersensitivity reactions may occur, especially in patients with previous penicillin allergies. Discontinue use immediately if allergic reactions develop. Prolonged use may result in superinfection. May alter results of certain laboratory tests including Coombs test and urine glucose tests.
Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, headache, and dizziness. Less common effects include rash, pruritus, and transient elevation in liver enzymes.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Not typically applicable for pediatric patients. For adolescent females, use during pregnancy only when clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in human milk in small amounts. Caution should be exercised when administering to nursing mothers.
Interactions
- Carbamazepine (increased plasma levels)
- Warfarin (enhanced anticoagulant effect)
- Probenecid (increased Cefixime levels)
- Antacids (delayed absorption)
- Aminoglycosides (synergistic effect)
- Oral contraceptives (reduced effectiveness)
- Nifedipine (increased bioavailability)
Precautions
Reconstitute powder only with purified water as directed. Store reconstituted suspension in refrigerator and use within 14 days. Shake well before each use. Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or history of gastrointestinal disease.
Important Information
Ezcef Dry Syrup should be taken at evenly spaced intervals to maintain consistent antibiotic levels. Always verify the correct dose based on the child’s weight and age. Ensure the bottle is shaken well before measuring each dose to ensure uniform distribution of the medication.
