SPC Liquid Quinine Syrup 150mg is an antimalarial medication containing 150mg of quinine per 5ml dose. This liquid formulation provides effective treatment for malaria, particularly severe cases, and is especially suitable for patients who cannot take oral tablets.
Uses
SPC Liquid Quinine Syrup treats malaria caused by Plasmodium species, including severe and complicated malaria cases. It’s particularly effective against chloroquine-resistant strains and is used when other antimalarials are ineffective or contraindicated. The syrup is ideal for children and adults with swallowing difficulties.
Benefits
- Effective against severe and complicated malaria
- Works on chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium strains
- Rapid reduction of parasitemia and fever
- Suitable for patients unable to take tablets
- Easy administration in pediatric patients
- Proven efficacy in life-threatening malaria cases

How It Works
Quinine interferes with the malaria parasite’s ability to break down and digest hemoglobin in red blood cells. It disrupts the parasite’s metabolic processes and prevents its replication within blood cells. This action leads to parasite death and clearance from the bloodstream, reducing fever and other malaria symptoms.

Duration of Action
SPC Liquid Quinine Syrup begins working within 2-4 hours of administration. Fever typically starts reducing within 24-48 hours. The medication reaches peak blood levels within 1-3 hours and has a half-life of 8-14 hours, requiring dosing every 8 hours for sustained effect.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Patients may experience headache, dizziness, or ringing in ears (tinnitus). Visual disturbances, temporary hearing loss, or skin rash may occur. Severe reactions include cardiac arrhythmias or severe allergic reactions requiring immediate medical attention.
Warning
Use only under medical supervision for confirmed malaria diagnosis. Quinine can cause serious cardiac arrhythmias and should be avoided in patients with heart rhythm disorders. Monitor blood glucose levels as hypoglycemia may occur. Discontinue if severe allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, or significant hearing/vision changes develop.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
SPC Liquid Quinine Syrup can be used during pregnancy when benefits outweigh risks, particularly for severe malaria which poses greater maternal and fetal risks. Quinine passes into breast milk but breastfeeding can usually continue under medical supervision in malaria-endemic areas.
Interaction

- Possible interaction with anticoagulants, increasing bleeding risk
- May affect blood sugar levels when used with diabetes medications
