Uses
Artix is primarily used for:
- Treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by P. falciparum
- Management of malaria in areas with multi-drug resistant strains
- Treatment of mixed malarial infections including P. falciparum
Benefits
- Highly effective against drug-resistant malaria strains
- Rapid parasite clearance
- Reduces risk of progression to severe malaria
- Convenient fixed-dose combination
- Well-tolerated with good safety profile
- Suitable for both adults and children (weight-based dosing)
How It Works
Artemether rapidly reduces parasite load by interfering with the parasite’s ability to detoxify heme. Lumefantrine, with its longer half-life, eliminates residual parasites and prevents recrudescence, providing both rapid symptom relief and sustained antimalarial action.
Dosage
Patient Weight | Dosage | Treatment Duration |
---|---|---|
≥35 kg | 1 tablet twice daily | 3 days (total 6 tablets) |
Take Artix with fatty food or milk to enhance absorption. Always follow your healthcare provider’s specific dosing instructions.
Duration of Action
Artemether begins working rapidly, with significant parasite reduction within 24-48 hours. Lumefantrine continues to eliminate remaining parasites for 3-4 days after treatment completion, providing protection against recurrence during this period.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal pain, and palpitations. These are usually mild and transient. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions, abnormal heart rhythms, or liver problems.
Warning
Artix should not be used for malaria prevention. It’s not recommended for patients with severe malaria or certain heart conditions. Use caution in patients with liver or kidney impairment. This medication may cause dizziness and affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Artix can be used during the second and third trimesters if clearly needed. First trimester use should be considered only when benefits outweigh potential risks. Limited data suggests Artix may be used during breastfeeding, though caution is advised.
Interaction
- May interact with drugs that affect heart rhythm
- Potential interactions with certain antidepressants and antibiotics
- Can interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers
- Avoid grapefruit juice during treatment
- May reduce effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives
Precaution
Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve. If vomiting occurs within 1 hour of dosing, repeat the dose. Seek medical attention if fever persists or returns within 28 days after treatment. Use effective birth control during and for at least 4 weeks after treatment if of childbearing age.
Important Information
