Havax Softgel Forte Capsule is a fixed-dose combination antimalarial medication containing artemether 80mg and lumefantrine 480mg. This potent combination therapy is designed to treat acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including in areas with multi-drug resistant strains.

How It Works

Artemether, a fast-acting artemisinin derivative, rapidly reduces the parasite biomass by interfering with the parasite’s ability to detoxify heme. Lumefantrine, a slower-acting antimalarial, eliminates residual parasites and prevents recrudescence. This combination provides both rapid symptom relief and sustained antimalarial action.

Dosage

The typical adult dosage is 1 softgel capsule twice daily for 3 days, making a total of 6 capsules. The second dose on the first day should be given 8 hours after the first dose. Subsequent doses should be given at 12-hour intervals. Take Havax with food or a milky drink to enhance absorption. Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, palpitations, and muscle or joint pain. These are usually mild and transient. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions, abnormal heart rhythms, or liver problems. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Warning

Havax should not be used for malaria prevention. It is not recommended for patients with severe malaria or certain heart conditions. Caution is advised in patients with liver or kidney impairment. This medication may cause dizziness and affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.

Important Information

Take Havax with food or milk to increase absorption. Complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve. If vomiting occurs within 1 hour of dosing, repeat the dose. Avoid grapefruit juice during treatment. Seek medical attention if fever persists or returns within 28 days after treatment. Use effective birth control during and for 4 weeks after treatment if pregnant.
