Primpex DS contains co-trimoxazole 960mg, combining sulfamethoxazole (800mg) and trimethoprim (160mg). This dual-action antibiotic treats various bacterial infections by preventing bacterial growth and reproduction.
Uses
Primpex DS treats urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections including bronchitis and pneumonia, ear infections, intestinal infections, and skin infections. It’s also prescribed for preventing and treating Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia in immunocompromised patients and for prophylaxis against infections in specific situations.
Benefits
- Treats multiple bacterial infections with dual-mechanism action
- Effective against broad spectrum of pathogens
- Convenient twice-daily dosing schedule
- Available in tablet form for easy administration
- Well-established safety and efficacy profile
- Provides both therapeutic and prophylactic benefits
How It Works
Primpex DS works synergistically as trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase while sulfamethoxazole blocks para-aminobenzoic acid utilization. This prevents bacteria from producing essential nucleic acids and proteins needed for survival.
Duration of Action
Effects begin within 1-2 hours with therapeutic levels maintained for 12 hours. Full antibacterial effect requires 48-72 hours. Treatment courses typically range from 5-14 days depending on infection type and severity.
