Abirapro contains Abiraterone 250mg, an androgen biosynthesis inhibitor used to treat metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. This medication blocks testosterone production to slow cancer progression in advanced prostate cancer patients.
Uses
Abirapro treats metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer in combination with prednisone. It’s prescribed for men whose cancer has progressed despite hormone therapy or surgical castration. Abirapro helps control advanced prostate cancer that no longer responds to standard hormone treatments.
Benefits
- Blocks testosterone production to slow cancer growth
- Extends progression-free survival in prostate cancer
- Improves overall survival rates when combined with prednisone
- Reduces prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels
- Delays development of bone metastases
- Maintains quality of life during treatment
- Provides oral treatment option for advanced disease
- Can be used with other cancer therapies
- Helps control cancer-related symptoms
How It Works
Abirapro inhibits CYP17A1, an enzyme critical for testosterone synthesis in the testes, adrenal glands, and prostate tumor tissue. By blocking this enzyme, Abirapro significantly reduces circulating and tissue testosterone levels, depriving prostate cancer cells of the hormones needed for growth and survival.
Dosage
Indication | Standard Dosage | Administration | Duration |
---|---|---|---|
Metastatic CRPC | 4 tablets (1000mg) once daily | On empty stomach with 5mg prednisone twice daily | Until disease progression |
Pre-chemotherapy | 4 tablets (1000mg) once daily | 2 hours before or 1 hour after meals | Continuous therapy |
Take Abirapro on empty stomach, at least 2 hours after eating and 1 hour before next meal. Swallow tablets whole with water.
Duration of Action
Abirapro reaches peak blood levels within 2 hours of administration. Testosterone suppression begins within days of starting treatment, with maximum suppression achieved within 8 days. The medication’s effects persist for approximately 24 hours, requiring daily dosing for continuous hormone suppression.
Side Effects
Common side effects include fatigue, joint swelling, muscle discomfort, hot flashes, diarrhea, and urinary tract infections. Some patients experience hypertension, fluid retention, or low potassium levels. Liver function changes may occur and require monitoring through blood tests.
Warning
Abirapro can cause severe liver toxicity, hypertension, and low potassium levels requiring regular monitoring. Must be used with prednisone to reduce side effects. Not indicated for women or children. Can cause serious heart problems and adrenal insufficiency. Immediate medical attention needed for signs of liver problems, severe high blood pressure, or heart complications.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
Abirapro is contraindicated in women and not indicated for use in females. Male patients should use effective contraception during treatment and for one week after final dose, as Abirapro may harm developing fetuses if female partners become pregnant.
Interaction
- May increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6
- Avoid strong CYP3A4 inducers which may reduce effectiveness
- Use caution with medications that prolong QT interval
- May interact with warfarin requiring INR monitoring
- Potential interactions with certain antiarrhythmic medications
- Food significantly increases absorption and toxicity risk
Precaution
Regular monitoring of liver function, blood pressure, potassium levels, and fluid retention is essential. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, liver impairment, or diabetes. Patients should avoid activities requiring alertness if experiencing dizziness or fatigue. Store at room temperature protected from moisture.
Important Information
Abirapro must always be taken with prednisone to reduce serious side effects. Never take with food as this increases drug levels and toxicity risk. Regular blood tests are necessary to monitor liver function and electrolyte levels. Inform all healthcare providers about Abirapro use. Report any signs of liver problems, severe fatigue, yellowing of skin, or difficulty breathing immediately.
